3rd Grade Thanksgiving Luncheon: Wednesday, Nov. 14th
Parents are invited to come have lunch with our classes in the cafeteria to celebrate Thanksgiving. Traditional Thanksgiving fare will be served for $3.75. Please plan to be present during your student's regular lunch time.

We can't believe it's already October!!!  Is it just us or did September last about 2 hours???

Either way, we're glad to welcome cooler temperatures and everyone's favorite candy holiday!

We had our first field trip on Oct. 10th.  We visited and toured the Carter Center and Presidential Library.  It was a beautiful building full of very interesting facts and artifacts about the life and presidency of Jimmy Carter.  Many of our student's favorite part was getting to stand in an exact replica of the Oval Office!!!  Maybe we have some aspiring presidents among our 3rd graders! :)

With October comes conference week, Oct. 15-19.  We look forward to discussing your scholar's report card and classroom behavior with you.  Behind everything we do, we believe in being on the same team as our student's parents and helping support their efforts to help their scholar at home.

In celebration of Halloween, Clay ES will be allowing students and teachers to dress up as their favorite book character.  Nothing scary, no pretend weaponry, and school appropriate are the requirements for costumes. If you have any questions please feel free to Dojo your scholar's classroom teacher.  Our team will be getting in the festive mood with classroom rotations!  Each room will have a different craft/activity going on with a Halloween theme!  We can't wait!!!

Amid all the fun we will continue learning about multiplication and division in math.  Our reading and writing will shift more toward non-fiction/informational texts where we will identify main ideas and supporting details and use text features to help us find information.  In science we will investigate the ways in which water and wind shape the world around us, and how fossils are formed.  Finally, in social studies, we will learn all about the Native American culture and how they lived on our continent before the are of explorers.

We are very excited to start our 2nd quarter and hope you and your student's are too!  Until next month!

Happy September Third Grade!!

We made it through the first month of school!  Your student has been learning the  rules and routines in their new classroom, and by now should be familiar with their 3rd grade schedule and responsibilities. Please, continue to stress to them the importance of organization and personal responsibility, as these two traits are a couple of the hardest for new 3rd graders to learn.  Habits like keeping a neat desk, filling out their agenda, remembering to bring their homework home and back to school each day are perfect examples of personal responsibility, so ask your student about how they're doing developing those!

We are almost finished with CogAT testing!  Thank goodness!  This test is designed to measure students' learned reasoning abilities that closely relate to success in school.  Next week we will begin the ITBS test.  This test is a multiple choice test that measures student achievement compared to a national sample of students who took the same test at the same time of year.  Neither of these tests should cause stress to you or your student.  It your student does feel any stress in response to either test just reassure them and remind them to try their best.  Also, please be sure your student comes to school on time each day, so that they won't have to miss any class time making up the test.

This 9 weeks your student will be learning:

- rounding to the nearest 10 and 100, addition and subtraction strategies, and the basics of multiplication and division.
- character traits, recounting stories, elements of prose, poetry, and drama, using context clues, capitalization, common suffixes, and nouns.
- the difference between rocks, minerals, and soils, and how to classify them.
- the basics of government and economics
- how to develop personal narratives (stories about themselves) and how to edit their writing.

As ever, we're so appreciative of the support and dedication of our parents and welcome any questions and concerns you may have.  We're just one email/text/Dojo message away, so don't hesitate to contact us!

Have a great month,
Third Grade Team

Our team consists of three awesome teachers: Ms. Gaubert, Ms. Myers, and Mrs. Outlaw.

We are happy to welcome you to the 2018 - 2019 school year! We are looking forward to a productive partnership with you to ensure our children can achieve their highest potential. We recognize that in order to be successful in school, our children need support from both the home and school. We know a strong partnership with you will make a great difference in your child’s education. As partners, we share the responsibility for our children’s success and want you to know that we will do our very best to carry out our responsibilities.

We ask that you guide and support your child’s learning by ensuring that he/she:
1) Attends school daily and arrives on time, ready for the day’s learning experience
2) Completes all homework assignments given by teachers
3) Reads daily to develop a love for reading and to improve literacy skills
4) Shares school experiences with you so that you are aware of his/her school life
5) Knows that you expect him/her to succeed in school

Please consider joining our school's PTA program as our students can greatly benefit from your involvement and contributions to the school’s program and its operations. We seek volunteers to help us with the following activities:
1) Teacher-led instructional support, usually in the classroom
2) Reading with children who need extra help
3) School-wide events
4) Student recognition events
5) Outreach and recruitment of parent and community volunteers

The wonderful 3rd grade team feels privileged to be a part of this school family, and is excited to have you and your student be a part of it as well. We thank you for your support and look forward to meeting you!
